The term “connective tissue” refers to tissues which surround, protect and
support all of the other structures in the body. Connective tissue is the matrix
which “connects” or binds together, the body’s organs, muscles, bones and all
other systems. Fascia, a specific type of connective tissue, is a continuous
sheath which provides structural support for the skeleton and soft tissues
(muscles, tendons, etc.). It can be negatively affected by gravity, injury,
illness, emotional trauma or other stressors. Each of these factors can cause
distortions in the connective tissue network. This imbalance usually manifests
as tightening or shortening of the fascia. This tightening of shortening causes
the fascia to lose flexibility and resilience and the individual is unable to
relax. The shortening can be experienced as pain, stiffness, discomfort, or
decreased flexibility and resilience anywhere in the body.
Myofascial massage works to restore length, flexibility and plasticity to
fascia. It works with very little, or without any, oil. The practitioner
begins by hooking directly into the fascia with a downward pressure, using
fingers, palms, knuckles or elbows. The contact is generally broad, slow and
very mindful as the practitioner slowly stretches the fascia back to its normal
state. Usually there is an immediate sense of relief. If the client has chronic
pain, then receiving these therapies can sometimes cause discomfort both during
and after the session. The therapist works with you, not on you, knows ways to
minimize discomfort and is careful to ensure that the work feels right to you.
Myofascial work can be helpful both in preventing, and rehabilitating from, many
types of injuries. It may be useful on or around a specific site of injury.
Because it relieves fascial strain and tension around joints, it is ideal to
reduce structural compensations which could otherwise develop following trauma.
This can mean a faster and more complete recovery and help to minimize the
body’s vulnerability to future injury. Finally, the sense of well-being that
ensues from a session can include more energy, increased breathing capacity, an
enhanced self-awareness, and relief from pain that manifests in a wide variety
of symptoms.
